HISTORY OF THE "FIFTH OCEAN" CLUB
Quote from the club's Avia Digest No. 1, October 1994.
"Our club was founded on April 4, 1992, as a result of attempts to unite radio amateurs connected with aviation. The first to take on this endeavor was Leonid Kamensky UA3DJJ, who came up with the idea of creating a club for radio amateurs-aviators. Leonid appealed to the amateur radio press, asking radio amateurs whose fate was tied to aviation to respond. About 500 people responded. Things got moving, and the first result was the issuance of a diploma proposed by UA3DJJ, ‘Soviet Aviation and Cosmonautics,’ approved by the TsAGI section in Zhukovsky. Following that, the ‘Takeoff’ diploma was issued by the Chernivtsi Aviation Society, to which Valentin Zhmylyov (UB5YBC) dedicated much effort. However, UA3DJJ's illness and other reasons prevented the club from developing actively, and at that time, no one supported its existence. The work came to a halt.
The idea of uniting radio amateurs-aviators was taken up again by Gennady Kulkov UA3ADX, with the support of Viktor Borodin UN7R (now RV3YR). A conference of radio amateur pilots was held in Moscow. The initiative group expressed the opinion that at the first stage of creating the club, it was possible to unite only a specific part of aviators, namely flying radio amateurs. This idea found support and became the basis for the club's Charter and its activities. A Club Council was elected, and it was decided to name the club ‘5th Ocean,’ with its first Chairman being pilot Gennady Kulkov UA3ADX."
During the first ten years, more than 250 people joined the club – pilots, navigators, and flight radio operators. Subsequently, the niche of actually flying radio amateurs was almost completely exhausted, and the club began to accept those who were simply connected with aviation, thus beginning the second stage of uniting radio amateurs-aviators.
In March 2014, a new Club Council was elected at a conference, which, in accordance with the club's Charter, elected a new President. He became Sergey Valentinovich Sushko, RV6LMG (now RZ5D). The new team took over the leadership of the club from the previous Council and, preserving all the good traditions and initiatives, began active work for the benefit of our club.
In October 2014, at a club conference, an updated Charter was unanimously adopted, in which it was decided to restore the club's original historical name: the international club of radio amateurs-aviators ‘Fifth Ocean’ and to continue uniting everyone associated with aviation.
The main concept of the club was, is, and will be – uniting radio amateurs-aviators. Now, all radio amateurs associated with aviation can, if they wish, freely join our club without any routine conditions.
Today, in addition to uniting radio amateurs-aviators, the club actively promotes the history and traditions of aviation, assists youth collective radio stations and veterans, maintains friendly relations with other amateur radio public organizations, organizes club competitions and activity days with prizes for winners and certificates for participants, operates special event callsigns, establishes and awards amateur radio diplomas on aviation-patriotic themes, and commemorates anniversaries and activists with memorial diplomas. A club aviation digest is published quarterly.
If you are associated with aviation and wish to become a member of the club, please contact the Secretary or the President.
We are always glad to see new members in the ranks of our large, friendly crew!"
